I realize you said you don't want to upload the full word document to Google and I also have that use case sometimes myself. This opens a Drawing Canvas with many additional tools. However, if you upload a Word document as a new Google Doc, then styles and images seem to work more or less correctly. Google Docs does not seem to allow users to copy these from a clipboard filled with a "cut" or "copy" that contains images and text from MS Word:
